Hamburg Süd
Restoration and conversion of the heritage-listed company headquarters and extension to include a new office building complete with underground carpark parallel to quayside.
On behalf of the transportation and shipping company Hamburg Süd, the administrative headquarters in Hamburg’s old town were thoroughly restored and expanded. A seven-storey new office building with atrium and a two-storey underground carpark join with the Ensemble on Nikolaifleet. The modernization measures for the heritage-listed existing building, which was designed in the 1960s by Prof. Cäsar Pinnau, included energy rehabilitation, renovating the façades, and adding a new storey to the high-rise using a lightweight construction. The old Condor Building between the high-rise and the new building serves to merge the new and the old buildings into a unit. All the shipping company’s workstations in Hamburg, around 800, are now brought together at this one location. Alongside office areas, the cafeterias, technical facilities and storerooms are housed within the ensemble.
Given the low soil bearing capacity, the new build stands on deep foundations consisting of full displacement piles. Since the basement is below the groundwater level, the base and walls are waterproof concrete structures.
