Indoor wave pool Meerzeit Büsum
Major refurbishment and extension transforms existing building into modern pool and spa complex
In order to strengthen the tourist location on the North Sea, the municipality of Büsum decided to fundamentally redesign and modernise the indoor wave pool built in the 1960s. The plans included an extensive energy-efficient renovation, a restructuring of the interior and a redesign of the entrance area. In addition to the large wave pool, the accessible wave pool now has a roof-top sauna, a training pool in the new extension and an attractive entrance. The outdoor area has been upgraded with new pool landscaping and a winter garden.
The refurbishment included the repair of the chloride-damaged reinforced concrete structures and the demolition and rebuilding of entire sections of the building, such as the wave pool roof. The badly damaged exercise pool was removed and replaced with a new pool and relaxation area. The conversion involved a number of complex constraints: the location within the dike, the proximity of a historic dike floodgate and the building fabric of various conversions over recent decades.
