Last Saturday, February 26 saw the official opening of the wave pool in Büsum, and from Monday guests can visit the pool again. To make the tourist location on the North Sea even more attractive, the municipality of Büsum decided the pool should undergo a fundamental redesign and modernization. Dating from the 1960s, the original pool was modernized to make it more energy-efficient and the interior redesigned in line with designs created by the architectural practice of janßen bär partnerschaft. Now the barrier-free wave pool boasts an attractive entrance area, a pool landscape in the outdoor area, a sauna on the roof terrace and a pool for schools and other classes in the new annex.
The radical refurbishment involved a number of challenges: the location in the levee, the proximity of an old sluice, and the substance left over from previous remodeling work. WTM Engineers provided the structural engineering, maintenance concept, fire protection planning and handled the on-site construction supervision for the restoration of the reinforced concrete structure, which was heavily contaminated with chloride from seawater.
