The consortium of WTM Engineers (Hamburg) and COWI (Copenhagen), in collaboration with architects Dissing+Weitling (Copenhagen), has won the competition to design the replacement for the Weser Bridge on the A1 motorway near Bremen.
The winning proposal features an elegant and slender prestressed concrete bridge supported by V-shaped piers. The design stands out for its functional clarity while meeting the highest technical and architectural standards. The jury recognised the design's harmonious integration into the surroundings, functionality, carefully considered constructability, and convincing integration of the cycle path into the existing road network. The structure’s outstanding cost-effectiveness was also emphasised.
'We are delighted with this award and the jury's confidence in our team. Our bridge design combines innovative ideas with technical efficiency and architectural quality, replacing an ageing structure with sustainable infrastructure on one of Germany's busiest motorway sections," says Dr Gerhard Zehetmaier, Managing Director of WTM Engineers.
The competition was organised by DEGES. The high-calibre jury selected the design from five very different entries in the competition.
