Our team has every reason to celebrate! Over the last ten years, more than 40 dedicated civil engineers and designers have played a key role in the planning and realization of the southern Überseequartier. Working across the disciplines, we developed innovative and sustainable structural solutions for the building and engineering work involved in this challenging and extraordinary project, which represents a milestone for Hamburg and our company.
The challenge: to create a new urban quarter on a site of around 5.5 hectares with 14 buildings in a densely built-up area. To this end, our planning team had to weigh up and solve a number of complex aspects at the same time. The location of the site right on the banks of the River Elbe posed particular challenges with regard to flood protection, the foundations, and indeed the three basement levels. All of this necessitated building an excavation pit up to 15 meters deep. In the middle of the building site is the Überseequartier stop on subway line U4, and the train kept running throughout construction. The various supporting structures of the buildings that took shape with their diverse uses were developed in cooperation with a total of 11 renowned architecture firms. Also worthy of mention are the foundations of the various outdoor facilities and the partial replacement of the Chicagokai, which were likewise planned by us.
The project was developed using BIM from the outset because in this way we were able to integrate the various specialist disciplines into the planning and organize implementation of the different construction phases efficiently. The result was closely coordinated collaboration and precise construction planning.
It was the combination of all these factors that made the project so special for us. Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is an impressive example of outstanding engineering – a real eye-catcher on Hamburg’s waterfront!
We were delighted to work with the following architecture firms: HPP, 2Portzamparc, Hild und K, Carsten Roth, BLK2, léonwohlhage, UNStudio, LRO, Hillmer und Richter, kbnk, Werner Sobek
