Den Blå Kant, Svendborg

Urban space, harbor life, climate adaptation.

As in many other port cities, the port of Svendborg is subject to continuous change. The port industry is retreating and the city is again conquering the water's edge. In order to pay tribute to this development, an urban planning competition was held, which aimed at the city's development towards the port as well as the necessary protection measures regarding climate change. In addition to dealing with cloud burst events, the protection of port and city from storm surges was an integral part of the competition.

In the team with EFFEKT Arkitekter, SWECO Architects and Arcgency, WTM Engineers International prevailed in a two-stage competition with their design of the flood protection measures.

The proposed concept of the polder, which took into account the historical and urban planning concept, includes about 2 km of reinforcing and raising of the quay walls and banks, as well as 3 storm surge barriers.
