Following an intense planning approvals process aimed at weighing up the varying interests of all those involved, the German side has now also been given the green light for construction of the Fehmarn Fixed Belt Link. On November 3, 2020, the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig announced its verdict on all the pending procedures – all objections were over-ruled and the planning approval resolution is valid in full and with no conditions. A milestone has been reached! The 18-kilometer-long immersed tunnel between Fehmarn in Germany and Lolland in Denmark can now be built. This tremendous feat of engineering will represent another step forward for mobility in Europe. As the world’s longest immersed tunnel, the link will in future provide a fast and elegant way to cross the Baltic.

WTM Engineers has been involved in the project for twelve years as consultants to the planning consortium and will now also supervise the construction work.
