A successful SuedLink Elbe crossing construction site Open Day.

The sun came out for the construction site Open Day at the ElbX river crossing project on May 20, 2025. Both in Wewelsfleth (Schleswig-Holstein) and in Wischhafen in Lower Saxony, anyone who was interested could get an insight into the large-scale project – for which a 5.2 km-long tunnel is being cut under the Elbe for the SuedLink power cables – and an idea of the challenges that come with it. The day brought plenty of interesting conversations for the project staff from WTM Engineers, who are in charge of site management and local construction supervision.

More than 230 visitors were guided through the two construction sites in small groups – personally protected with helmets, vests, and safety shoes, of course. During the 30-minute guided tours, the experts imparted a wealth of knowledge and gave participants a “wow” moment when they looked down into the 24-meter-deep shaft structures. The ELSA tunnel boring machine has been drilling between the shafts since February and has so far covered 850 meters of tunnel. The tunnel’s patron Jette Waldinger-Thiering, Vice President of the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament, also took the opportunity to visit “her” tunnel again.

We are proud that our experts played a part supporting the successful implementation of the event.

The Elbe crossing project involves the following: the client TenneT Germany, the planning consortium WTM Engineers GmbH and BabEng GmbH, and the construction consortium of PORR Deutschland and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG.
