What’s it like to work in an engineering firm? Fifteen students were able to find out at this year’s Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day at our offices in Hamburg and Berlin.
At our Hamburg office, the 14 young people began their day with a group session: Colleagues in various departments provided insights into our work and demonstrated just how varied everyday life in an engineering firm can be.
Specific projects used as examples brought the work to life: What do you need to think about when planning a subway station in Hamburg-Mitte? What are the advantages of 3D planning in the remodeling of a large production facility?
The question of “How do projects end up with us?” was also addressed in a practical way. In an interactive group task, the school students took on the role of a jury and applied real criteria to decide which engineering firm would be awarded the contract for a new school building.
A highlight of the afternoon was the construction site tour in Ohlsdorf: After an introduction in the site trailer, participants were able to see the construction of a bridge up close – including the bridge segments already supplied – and gain a good idea of the ongoing work the typical challenges faced on site.
There were also exciting insights to be had at our office in Berlin: A student shadowed the team in the office, took part in a project meeting, and visited a construction site where the Berlin Verkehrsbetriebe local transport utility is working on the barrier-free expansion of the Seestrasse subway station on line U6.
Future Day offers an important opportunity to inspire young people to pursue technical careers and provide them with hands-on insights. We are delighted to have been part of this initiative again this year.
