Water flowing for the construction of the fifth lock chamber in Brunsbüttel

In the context of the projected first partial flooding, a total of 11,000 cubic meters of water swooshed through the pumps into the outside gate and 6,000 cubic meters of water into the inside gate. These processes took 11 and 2.5 hours respectively. The successful conclusion of this first stage of flooding on Monday evening represented another milestone in this gigantic hydraulic engineering project on the Kiel Canal.
The outside and inside gate, the closing ends of the sluice chamber, will be gradually flooded, so that the subsequent demolition and expansion works can be undertaken.
