The building at Ziegelstrasse 5 in Berlin, designed in the pavilion style by Martin Gropius and Heiner Schmieden, before its conversion and renovation according to plans by Burkhardt Architekten.

On Tuesday, June 10, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin celebrated the successful conversion and renovation of the north wing of its Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences. The listed building, which dates from 1878–83, was made fit for today’s teaching requirements by our structural engineers with a number of architectural adjustments. All within the specified geometry!

One key aspect was strengthening the existing ceilings to bear higher loads from the library and storage areas. Numerous changes to the floor plan required a new load-bearing axis, a connecting bridge, and a large number of new door openings. Improvements in the building’s energy use were also a major focus, so targeted reinforcements in the work on the roof, for example, have now made it possible to install photovoltaics.

We can only echo the sentiments expressed in the speeches at the ceremony: The good cooperation between all those involved in the project makes the historical site, which has been used for research and science from the outset, fit for the future. We wish Humboldt-Universität all the best in applying its creative energy within these new, old walls.
