In the competition for the Entenwerder foot and cycle bridge, the design by Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes and WTM Engineers was one of the solutions that received special commendations.
The new, approx. 130-meter-long bridge is to connect HafenCity with Entenwerder and Rothenburgsort and crosses the Oberhafenkanal at a prominent place in the immediate vicinity of the Elbbrücken and the Elbtower. Particularly exacting were the requirements for the bridge’s design to fit into the setting. At the same time, the structure had to be convincing in functional terms, offering somewhere for people to linger and take in the views, and it also had to be highly sustainable.
In an international competition involving a total of ten teams, our design scored points on various levels and was highly praised. Among other things, the jury noted that it was: “An elegant and dainty bridge that spans the canal unsupported, and in doing so minimizes the incursions into the two ecologically sensitive embankments. […] As a result, the design slots into the setting of the landscape very well. It does not aim to pit itself against the Elbbrücken and yet represents a standalone contribution to the set task.”
