German Digital Award 2021: Gold for smartBRIDGE Hamburg

The result of interdisciplinary collaboration – a major bridge that’s also smart.

smartBRIDGE is a pilot project for digital maintenance and monitoring of infrastructure elements using a digital twin.

A digital twin needs reliable sensors! Here, the sensors on the stay cables are tested by a technician from WTM Engineers.

The winners of the German Digital Award 2021 (DDA) have been announced, and we are lucky enough to be one of them! All in all, the German Association for the Digital Economy (BVDW) presented 12 golds for the best digital projects this year, with smartBRIDGE Hamburg able to convince the jury in the category Digital Transformation | Innovation.

The German Digital Award is the most important prize for top creative digital achievements in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The video for our entry is available to watch on YouTube here.

For smartBRIDGE Hamburg, the Köhlbrand Bridge, one of the landmarks of the Hanseatic city, was fitted out with an extensive system of sensors and supplemented with a digital twin – as a pilot project for the intelligent bridges of the future. The main objective here is optimized maintenance of infrastructure elements. smartBRIDGE Hamburg is being developed jointly by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Marx Krontal Partner, customQuake and WTM Engineers.
