Maintenance and preservation of the world’s largest park cemetery requires numerous employees to work on the 390-hectare site every day. A new works yard is now being built for them in the east of the park, which will include workshops, a plant nursery, and a staff building. WTM Engineers is handling the structural planning of the buildings, which are made of reinforced concrete and steel, and is also drawing up the fire protection concept.
The upper floor of the staff building, which in future will house the canteen with terrace and offices, will be made of timber. The building will be equipped with a full-surface photovoltaic system on the roof and a heat pump.
The foundation stone for the future-oriented building complex was laid on November 3, with a keynote speech given by Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor of Hamburg. With Carsten Helberg, Managing Director of Hamburger Friedhöfe, Tim Bauerfeind, TRU Architekten, and Dr. Bettina Schomburg, Head of the Hamburg-Nord District Administration, all present, the new development was officially launched.
WTM Engineers is proud to be involved in a project that contributes significantly to the preservation of a place of rest and recreation that is important for Hamburg and its guests.
The works yard is due to be completed in 2027, just in time for the cemetery’s 150th anniversary.
