January 16 saw the ceremonial start of construction for the European XFEL visitor and conference center. State Secretary Mario Brandenburg of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Mayor of Schenefeld Christiane Küchenhof symbolically began the work. The new building will be a point of contact for scientific event groups and the general public, and will in future house seminar rooms, a lecture hall, and laboratories. In addition, an interactive exhibition will familiarize visitors with the ins and outs of the world’s largest X-ray laser. The construction of the European XFEL, which incorporates a fan-shaped tunnel system totaling 7 km from the DESY site in Hamburg to Schenefeld in Schleswig-Holstein, was planned under the lead management of WTM Engineers and completed back in 2017. We are delighted to continue the long-standing successful cooperation with DESY and XFEL here at the visitor center. Our services for the structural design are well on schedule, so we are looking forward to swift progress in construction.
