Construction begins on the Mühlendamm weir in Berlin

This important section of the waterway infrastructure saw a gathering last Friday for the symbolic first pile-driving, attended by representatives of the Directorate-General for Waterways and Shipping, the Berlin Waterways Construction Office, and the construction companies executing the project.

The symbolic first pile-driving on Friday, July 11, marked the launch of construction for the replacement of one of Germany’s busiest locks. Each year, up to 36,000 boats and ships pass through the gates marking where the River Spree meets the Mühlendamm.

In future, a modern and efficient facility will not only stand where previously a 1940s structure was in place, but will also provide the necessary ecological continuity for fish.

WTM Engineers is reviewing the design and implementation planning for the new structure and wishes everyone involved smooth sailing throughout this project!
