Sustainability through preservation – the Alzbrücke Seebruck makes it into the 2026 Ingenieurbaukunst yearbook

We are delighted that our Alzbrücke Seebruck bridge project is being presented as one of 25 outstanding projects in the current “Ingenieurbaukunst” yearbook of civil engineering. The bridge is a clear demonstration of how the culture of building involves more than just new construction – in fact it’s all about the respectful treatment of existing structures.

By combining state-of-the-art diagnostic methods to preserve the over 90-year-old substructures with a lightweight steel composite construction, innovative use of lightweight concrete, and a high degree of prefabrication, we were able to significantly extend the bridge’s service life. Moreover, the short construction period for this ensured minimal impact on the ecosystem and CO₂ savings of around 8,000 tons.

The contribution by Dr. Otto Wurzer, WTM Engineers, and Florian Paukner from the Traunstein State Building Authority shows how what might look like minor interventions can have a big impact and how civil engineering in Germany combines sustainability and quality.

The book is being published by the Federal Chamber of Engineers through the publisher Ernst & Sohn. This year’s theme is “Civil engineering in the city” – a topic that concerns us all. Whether in urban areas or in sensitive landscapes such as Lake Chiemsee: Civil engineering means taking responsibility, finding clever solutions, and following sustainable paths.
